Pop icon Cher reveals a heartbreaking chapter from her past in her latest memoir, recounting a moment when she considered ending her life during her troubled marriage to Sonny Bono by jumping from her Las Vegas hotel balcony (via People).

The shocking revelation dates back to 1972, when Cher was deep into her marriage with Bono. (Their story began in 1962 when Cher was just 16 and Bono was 27; they had an unofficial ceremony in 1964.) Despite riding high on their musical success and their hit TV program, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, behind the scenes, their personal life was crumbling.

In her candid memoir, Cher portrays Bono as someone who needed to maintain control, sharing how she felt increasingly โ€œtrappedโ€ in their relationship. Standing at her Vegas hotel balcony at age 26, Cher recalled: โ€œI was dizzy with loneliness. I saw how easy it would be to step over the edge and simply disappear. For a few crazy minutes I couldnโ€™t imagine any other option. I did this five or six times.โ€

The superstar credits thoughts of her loved ones for pulling her back from the edge, along with her awareness that โ€œthings like this could make people who look up to me feel that itโ€™s a viable solution.โ€ This dark moment led Cher to an empowering realization.

โ€œI donโ€™t have to jump off,โ€ she wrote. โ€œI can just leave him.โ€ (The coupleโ€™s separation followed shortly after, with divorce proceedings starting in 1974 and finalizing the next year.)

The starโ€™s new book โ€” simply titled Cher, The Memoir: Part One โ€” hits shelves today, Nov. 19. It chronicles her journey from being Cherilyn Sarkisian to becoming a global sensation, including her complex relationship with Bono. Fans can expect the second part next year.
