Cheryl Cole has broken her silence following the tragic passing of her former partner, Liam Payne.
The ex-One Direction star, only 31, lost his life on Wednesday, Oct. 16, after a devastating fall at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Two days later, the 41-year-old Girls Aloud singer shared her heartfelt thoughts on Instagram.
Cheryl, who was in a relationship with Payne from 2015 to 2018 and is mom to their 7-year-old son Bear Grey, began her message with raw emotion: “As I try to navigate this earth shattering event, and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I'd like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being.”
The “Fight for This Love” artist went on, “Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our 7 year old son. A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again.”
Cheryl then spoke about Bear, expressing her heartache at being unable to shield him from the painful details of his dad's passing. She pleaded, “Before you leave comments or make videos, ask yourself if you would like your own child or family to read them.”
She concluded with a poignant request: “Please give Liam the little dignity he has left in the wake of his death to rest in some peace at last.”
Their story began in 2008 when Payne auditioned for The X Factor, with Cheryl as a judge. Their romance blossomed seven years later, going public in 2015. They welcomed Bear Grey in 2017 but parted ways in July 2018, just over a year after becoming parents.
Despite their split, they remained committed co-parents to their son.
Sources said they were still close friends at the time of their split—which they called a “mutual loving decision” in a social media statement.
“Cheryl and Liam worked really hard on their relationship — they had troubles earlier this year and were able to get through them,” one insider told The Sun (per Page Six). “But they’re in different stages of their lives and, after a lot of careful thought, came to a decision that it’s best for everyone if they do go their separate ways.”
