DeAngelo Jackson is the first black man to win a GAYVN Best Actor Award in 2020 and most recently claimed the most coveted GAYVN Performer of The Year 2021 title, from the adult film industry’s equivalent to the Oscars.
He started his career in 2009 and is now in his third year as Noir Male’s exclusive contract performer. DeAngelo serves as the narrator and executive producer of a new documentary film, Being Black in Porn. The trailer debuted in June and can be seen here.
The film follows the lives of four gay men of color as they navigate their way in the adult film industry and examines the racism and inequality they often encounter.
Through interviews with the men in NYC, Chicago, Las Vegas, and LA, the film examines their unique experiences including their encounters with racism (being cast in servant roles or as thugs; also, facing white performers who refuse to perform with them because of the color of their skin), stereotypes (black talent are expected to have large penises and they’re made to bottom when they do not) and inequality (though “BBC films” is one of the most searched terms in porn, black actors report making less money than their white counterparts).
In addition to their time behind the camera, the doc delves into the personal lives of the men, exploring the impact their careers have on their real worlds, on social media and in the global Black Lives Matter movement
DeAngelo said, “I had to share this story.” He selected the main cast for the documentary: Dillion Diaz, Max Konnor, and Rock Rockfella, an industry legend who directed DeAngelo’s first scene in adult film. “I had to do this for my fellow brothers and sisters in the entire adult industry. I learned early on that if we don’t stand for something, we will fall for anything.”
DeAngelo discussed his career and lots more as he answered the Socialite Seven. Get to know this dynamic performer who hopes to change the public perception of adult entertainment performers.
How did you get into the adult entertainment industry?
I got into adult films when I was in college. I was studying criminal justice and wanted to find a unique way to make some money and here I am.
What are you hoping to achieve with the Being Black in Porn documentary?
I hope to spark a dialogue around a very important topic. Truth is there are racial discrimination in every industry, and people just don’t want to have that conversation to urge change. Being Black In Porn is jumpstarting this talk on a larger platform.
If they made a movie of your life story, who would you want to portray you on the big screen?
That’s a good one. Wow! I must be honest I think I want to try it out myself. I am actually currently on set in NYC shooting my very first mainstream role outside adult film. I just landed the lead role on a scripted tv series for Here TV. I am working with an incredible cast of well-seasoned actors, and secretly taking so many notes that I hope to apply to my film and tv career.
Who has been the biggest influence on you in your life or career so far?
The largest influence over my life at this present moment is my partner. He’s my rock and biggest supporter.
What talent would you like to wake up with tomorrow?
I wish I was a talented dancer. Imagine being able to travel the world and create art through movement. I have always been a huge fan of Alvin Ailey, and to be a part of that dance company would be absolutely magical.
What are three things you can’t live without?
Sushi, the gym and my family.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Rock Rockafella told me to always stay humble and show up on time. This is something I still do today.
