Halsey has addressed their fans, expressing regret about their return to music following unkind responses to their single “Lucky.”
Last week (July 26, 2024), Halsey dropped the lead single from their upcoming fifth album. “Lucky” borrows from Britney Spears‘ famous song of the same name and reveals Halsey’s personal struggles in the spotlight. The lyrics touch on becoming a single parent and ongoing health issues.
While many fans applauded Halsey’s honesty, some expressed disappointment with their new direction. In response, Halsey stated they don’t want to engage in an environment “completely lacking any kindness, sympathy, patience.”
On Tumblr, Halsey wrote: “My own fans are by far the meanest to me compared to anyone else. Not all of you, of course. But it used to be just a small group that was awful to me, and now it seems like most have only stuck around to occasionally share how much they dislike me or how terrible I am.”

Halsey continued: “It’s tough to want to engage in a space that’s completely lacking any kindness, sympathy, patience; or honestly, basic human decency. Especially after years of avoiding interactions for fear that this EXACT thing would happen. I don’t know, man.”
Referring to their health struggles, they added: “I almost lost my life. I am not gonna do anything that doesn’t make me happy anymore. I can’t spiritually afford it.”

Halsey then shared how they initially felt excited about releasing new music and reconnecting with fans. They wrote: “When I got sick, all I could think about was getting better so I could come back and be a part of THIS again, but I don’t even know what *this *is anymore and I want to hide away and I regret coming back.”
Halsey concluded in a follow-up post: “Anyway. I’m heading to a PET scan. And uploading lucky stripped. This is the crazy irony my life has become. I’m a human being. Not a character in a music video.”
Halsey recently disclosed their diagnoses of Lupus SLE and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder.
