Singer John Chandler Answers the Socialite Seven

John Chandler

John Chandler came on to the music scene as a member ofย 6PIECE, a boy band launched by Maurice Starr, the man behind New Edition and New Kids on the Block.

The group opened forย NSYNCย on the Pop Odyssey Tour and shared the stage with acts likeย Alicia Keys, Jagged Edge, andย Trisha Yearwood.

After 6PIECE broke up, John went off on his own and today, he released the video for his new single โ€œMissing.โ€ The soulful track was inspired by a conversation with his father. He recalls, โ€œI was visiting from New York City, where I was living at the time, and not sure if I was in the right relationship, working the right job or living in the right city. Dad said to me, โ€˜Itโ€™s not always whatโ€™s wrong with a situation, sometimes itโ€™s whatโ€™s missing. Find out what that thing is, and that will guide you.โ€™โ€

John says his Dadโ€™s simple message resonated with him and started him on a journey of making some major life changes, including breaking up with his boyfriend, leaving New York, and ultimately writing the song.ย ย

About the new song, John says that, โ€œWeโ€™ve all woken up wondering if we are doing enough to fulfill our purpose in life.โ€ He added, โ€œFor me, the message in โ€˜Missingโ€™ is that often what weโ€™re chasing and searching for is inside ourselves and the key to happiness is remaining centered.โ€

โ€œMissingโ€ is the first release off of Johnโ€™s upcoming EP that chronicles his road to self-discovery. The working title is Running, Missing, Changing, Growing; literally, the EPs tracklist.ย  Each single has sad but hopeful lyrics that each tell a story all their own.

โ€œ2020 has changed my life forever, and this EP reflects that,โ€ John says.ย  โ€œIโ€™ve been wrestling with the end of a relationship, being fired from my job, living in a new city, raising money for my Momโ€™s stage 4 Cancer treatment, and all during a global pandemic.โ€

Because of the pandemic, John couldnโ€™t shoot the music video in New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta, as he had intended.ย  He shot it locally, in Nashville.ย  In order to capture the energy of the single, John and director Cooper Smith filmed in several locations throughout the city including the metal scrapyards next to the Nissan Stadium, by the Cumberland River, in Printers Alley, downtown and in the cityโ€™s tallest luxury skyscraper, the 505. โ€œThis year the universe told us all to take a seat,โ€ John Chandler jokes today.ย  โ€œIt didnโ€™t matter who you were or where you lived, we were all forced to put things on pause.โ€

โ€œWhen COVID passes, and we start reintroducing things back into our lives, my hope is that we donโ€™t just go back to life as normal,โ€ he continues. ย โ€œI hope we let go of the things that never really mattered and allow room in our lives for what has truly been missing.ย  We have the opportunity to find a new type of happiness and way of life. Thatโ€™s what my song and upcoming EP are all about.โ€

We chatted with John about his career and lots more as we put him in the hot seat for the latest edition of the Socialite Seven. Get to know more about this singer as he embarks on a new chapter in his musical journey.

When did you know that you wanted to become a singer? And have there been any moments in which you regretted your decision (in the moment)?

I started playing the piano before I was a singer, and then I just started singing along to whatever I was playing. Being a singer/songwriter just seemed like a naturalย progression. Iโ€™ve honestlyย never regretted pursuing music, but of course Iโ€™ve questioned it sometimes. Itโ€™s such a hard businessย , and SO over saturated at the moment.ย

Who has had the biggest influence on your music and why?

I honestly get inspiration from so many things, itโ€™s hard to pin pointย a certain artist or person that influences me. But, Iโ€™ll say that people who play an instrument while they sing always inspire me, because theyโ€™re expressing themselves with more than one instrument, it really tells a story.

Who (if anyone) would you love to collaborate with?ย

So many people, haha. Iโ€™d have to say John Mayer, because heโ€™s the reason I started writing years ago. He told me I had a goodย voice while I sang in his apartment in Atlanta, and suggested I write my own material. That changed my life. That would be a full circle moment.ย

What type of music or artist that you listen to frequently do you think your fans would be surprised to learn that youโ€™re a fan of?ย

I honestly love Gospel music, I donโ€™tย alwaysย understand what theyโ€™reย talking about, but you FEEL what theyโ€™re saying. I also like rap, jazz, popโ€ฆif itโ€™s good, I listen

What are you hoping to achieve with your music?

John Chandler

I never lose my dreams, but they evolve.ย  What I wanted as a kid compared to now as an adult is much more practical. I value stability (money) over fame, and happiness over accolades. I want to be able to create for the rest of my life, thatโ€™s it.ย

What are three things you canโ€™t live without?

Not to get dark, haha, but thatโ€™s not up to me. Life takes away whatever it wants. So Iโ€™d say, my sense of humor, my creativity, and my empathy.

Whatโ€™s the best piece of advice youโ€™ve been given?ย

Probablyย the advice that myย  Dad gave me, which lead to me writingย my newest single. Itโ€™s not whatโ€™s wrong, but whatโ€™s MISSING (shameless plug). Isnโ€™t that what weโ€™re all doing, trying to find balance and happiness through finding out whatโ€™s missing in our lives?
