Lizzo has secured a significant win in her ongoing legal dispute with a former stylist who alleged experiencing racial and sexual harassment, a hostile work environment from the singer's management team during a 2023 tour, and unpaid overtime compensation.
On Monday, a Los Angeles federal judge determined that wardrobe assistant Asha Daniels couldn't pursue legal action against the pop star individually after establishing that the singer's touring and payroll companies were her actual employers. However, Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc remains a defendant in the continuing case.
US district judge Fernando L Aenlle-Rocha threw out all seven claims against Lizzo, including those involving her tour manager, Carlina Gugliotta. The judge also granted a partial dismissal of several claims since Daniels' work took place in Europe, where US employment laws aren't applicable.
Fashion designer Daniels alleges Lizzo maintained an “unsafe, sexually charged workplace culture,” which the singer has denied. She claimed the star's wardrobe manager expressed “racist and fatphobic” comments and ridiculed black women in the entourage.
A spokesperson for the singer called the case an “absurd publicity stunt.” Her lawyers described Daniels as a “disgruntled” former employee with “meritless and salacious” claims. Lizzo, celebrated for hits like Truth Hurts and Juice, has built her brand on body positivity but faced multiple similar accusations last year.
Daniels' allegations mirror previous claims from three of Lizzo's former tour dancers, who filed suit against the star in August last year, citing sexual harassment and fat-shaming incidents during 2021 and 2023. In a statement at the time, Lizzo denied the allegations: “These sensationalized stories are coming from former employees who have already publicly admitted that they were told their behavior on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional.”
The performer and her Big Grrrl Big Touring company have asked the court to dismiss the dancers' claims. The dancers are seeking a jury trial. This April, Lizzo – whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson – reassured fans on social media that she wasn't planning to step away from the spotlight.
She had previously written: “I quit,” expressing frustration over online criticism about her appearance and character. She later clarified in a new video: “When I say ‘I quit', I mean I quit giving any negative energy attention.”
