Leave it to pop’s ultimate shapeshifter to decide that seven letters were holding her back. On August 31, Miley Cyrus, the 33-year-old superstar wiped her social media clean, changing her handles to a mononymic “Miley” and triggering immediate online chaos.
She dropped “Cyrus” from her digital footprint, updating her domain from mileycyrus.com to mileyofficial.com. Fans quickly declared, “Oh, she’s just being Miley,” echoing her classic 2007 debut single.
The sudden pivot comes straight on the heels of major career shakeups. Just one month prior, the singer signed with Atlantic Records after five years with Sony Music’s Columbia Records.
Her former label released Endless Summer Vacation in 2023 and Something Beautiful in May 2025. The former housed “Flowers,” which earned her her first Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance in 2024.
The shedding of her famous surname isn’t entirely unprecedented. Over a decade ago, she openly pondered the concept of stripping away her lineage.
“I was thinking about dropping the Cyrus and just being Miley but there’s something powerful about the fact that my name now is like a household name,” she told Notion magazine in 2013.
Now, her surname has “officially clocked off” as she gears up for her 10th studio project. Speaking to Wonderland magazine around her label switch, she revealed details about the creative process.
“This one was different. It was organic and really unforced,” she explained. “Something that was super helpful this time was I started with the tracklist and never veered from it”.
She promised a tight, deliberate collection for her next rollout. “I knew it would be 10 songs. I roughly knew the sound and the concept,” she said. “That gave me a really strong compass without making the process feel forced”.
The project will center on a “love story,” marking a fresh chapter after a heavy emotional stretch. The aesthetic refresh coincided with the tragic loss of her godmother, country icon Dolly Parton, who died on August 25.
Alongside two striking red-and-black photos uploaded to Instagram, she posted the singular, bold caption, “MILEY”. Speculation immediately blew up across pop culture feeds, with followers declaring it “the most Miley move ever”.
