Marriage Story, The Irishmen, White People, and Men Lead the 2020 Golden Globe Nominations: ENDNOTES

Golden Globe Nominations

Netflix dominated the 77th Golden Globes nomination list announced Monday morning, with Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story leading the way with six nominations including best motion picture and drama.

Netflix led all studios with a whopping 17 total nominations, including four films vying for best film in the drama and comedy or musical categories. The five nominees for best drama film are The Irishman, Marriage Story, 1917, Joker, and The Two Popes. On the TV side of the nominations list, The Crown, Chernobyl, and Unbelievable are out in front, having received four nominations each.

In the movie race, stories about and by women like including Harriet, Little Women, Bombshell and Hustlers were omitted from the major races although some of their stars, including Saoirse Ronan, Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Theron and Cynthia Erivo won acting nods.

The director field was an all-male affair dominated by veterans Tarantino, Scorsese, Mendes, Todd Phillips for Joker and South Korea’s Bong Joon-Ho for social satire Parasite.

Among the biggest snubs was Ava DuVernay’s searing television dramatization of the wrongful imprisonment of five black teens for a 1989 rape in New York’s Central Park, which won two Emmy awards earlier this year.

Ricky Gervais will return to host the awards on Jan. 5, having previously hosted them four times. Tom Hanks will receive a lifetime achievement award at the event.

Ryan Reynolds, who’s appeared in dozens of TV shows and movies since 1991, understands the pain of being part of a flop — remember Green Lantern? And after he saw what was happening with that viral Peloton ad, within hours he’d hired the actress in it, Monica Ruiz, to do a funny response to the backlash in a commercial for his own Aviation American Gin.

In an interview on Sunday, Mr. Reynolds said he had heard about the Peloton commercial on Tuesday, when his business partner, George Dewey, sent him a 2:34 p.m. text about the backlash. Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Dewey run Maximum Effort Productions, an entertainment and marketing company that has gained a reputation for advertising stunts, including a mock Twitter war between Mr. Reynolds and his fellow superhero-movie star Hugh Jackman.

Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Dewey decided to respond to the Peloton ad with a promotion of the gin company, knowing they had to do work quickly, before the social media furor had died down.

“Ads are generally disposable pieces of content,” Mr. Reynolds said. “If you’re going to do something like this, you have to jump on the zeitgeist-y moment as it happens.”
