Nicola Coughlan, star of Netflix’s Bridgerton, has responded to accusations that her appearance was digitally altered on the show.
In an interview with People magazine, Coughlan explained that the period-specific costumes, particularly corsets, could be influencing perceptions of her body’s shape.
“I think if you wear corsetry for long enough, your body really molds to it,” Coughlan stated in the interview published Wednesday (Jun. 12, 2024).
The Derry Girls actress elaborated, “Sometimes they come in a fitting with a fashion designer and they put a corset on me, and I’m like, ‘Oh, you can go tight.’ And they go, ‘What do you mean?’ I’m like, ‘My body now will go whew.'”
Coughlan also addressed online speculation about photo editing. “I saw some trolls. They were like, ‘They photoshopped your waist,’ and I was like, ‘No, they did not,'” she clarified.
