It’s official! The iconic Christmas chart in the UK has been topped this year by none other than the beloved duo Wham! with their timeless hit, “Last Christmas.” This news confirms that the chart isn’t just a fictional plot device from the romantic comedy Love Actually – it’s a real phenomenon.

In an exciting announcement shared on social media by both the official Wham! account and Official Charts, Andrew Ridgeley expressed his joy and nostalgia, stating, “George would be beside himself, after all these years, to finally attain the Christmas no. 1 spot.” It’s a heartwarming moment for the late George Michael and a testament to his songwriting talent.

The cultural impact of Wham! and their cherished holiday anthem has been undeniable this year. Even Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney couldn’t resist paying homage to the band. In a playful Instagram post, they recreated the album image from “Last Christmas,” complete with Reynolds sporting the signature floppy blond hair that George Michael made famous.

Originally released in December 1984, “Last Christmas” spent an impressive five consecutive weeks at number two on the UK Singles Chart. Over the years, the song has been covered by numerous artists, including Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Jimmy Eat World, and the Backstreet Boys. Its enduring popularity speaks volumes about its enduring charm.

While George Michael may no longer be with us, his legacy lives on through Wham! and their timeless music. Ridgeley is the surviving member of Wham!, after Michael died on Christmas day almost seven years ago, in 2016.
